Description

"Simurgh Plays a Human Game" is an artwork created during the University of Tennessee artist-in-residency program at the School of Art. Inspired by Persian mythology, the painting depicts the Simurgh, a mythical bird, engaging in a game of basketball with humans. In Persian mythology, the Simurgh is a wise and benevolent creature often associated with the sun, possessing immense knowledge and symbolizing wisdom. Described as a giant, peacock-like bird, the Simurgh is believed to be able to travel between the earthly and heavenly realms. The artwork explores the parallels between the human game of basketball and the mythical realm, suggesting that in both, there is a sense of flying or transcending earthly limitations. By depicting the Simurgh and humans playing together, the artwork connects the play of sports with ritual, play, and myth-making practices, inviting viewers to consider the deeper significance of these activities.
